A Few of My Favorite Culinary Movies

As a culinary arts teacher, I’m always looking for fun ways to keep my students inspired—inside and outside of the kitchen. Here’s a curated list in no particular order of my top picks that truly showcase the wonderful world of Foodservice and Hospitality.


 

1. The Hundred-Foot Journey 

 French haute cuisine meets Indian spices in this story of culture clash and culinary creativity. It shows so many different parts of the foodservice industry.

2. Julie & Julia 

 This film intertwines the life of Julia Child and a modern-day blogger trying to recreate her recipes. It's a tribute to passion, persistence, and butter.

3. Ratatouille 

 A rat with a dream of becoming a chef? This animated classic is charming, funny, and surprisingly accurate about kitchen hierarchy.

4.  East Side Sushi 

An immigrant single mother decides to take a chance working at a Japanese restaurant and realize her dream to become a sushi chef and provide a better future to her family.

5. No Reservations 

This movie really celebrates the culinary world while showcasing some beautifully complicated relationships between the characters.  Chef life has it's own rhythm and it really shows.

6. Heavyweights 

A group of underdog kids discover their beloved summer camp has been sold to a crazy fitness fanatic who's determined to make their lives miserable! The new owner plans to keep the boys huffing and puffing, but these hungry kids have a plan of their own.

7. Waiting 

Not school appropriate, but this movie focuses on the wait staff, who spend their shift navigating their personal issues, dealing with demanding customers, and goofing around with each other.

8. Waitress 

A pregnant waitress is trapped in an unhappy marriage to an abusive husband, Earl. She finds solace and a creative outlet in baking pies at Joe's Diner, even using them to express her feelings.

9. Spanglish 

"Spanglish" is a 2004 comedy-drama about a Mexican woman, Flor Moreno, who immigrates to Los Angeles with her daughter, Cristina, seeking a better life. Flor takes a job as a housekeeper for the Clasky family, where John, a successful chef, and his insecure wife, Deborah, live with their children and Deborah's mother.

10. Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook Off 

"Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off" is a Disney Channel Original Movie about a high school baseball player, Eddie Ogden, who secretly enters a cooking competition. He faces ridicule from his teammates and his baseball coach (who is also his father) for pursuing his passion for cooking.
